My goldfish is lying on its side in the pond most of the time. He swims around briefly now and then. It is winter so my fish are not feeding at the moment. The other fish are fine.

I suspect you have a water quality issue? How often do you change the water in your pond? How big is it, and how many fish are in it?

Temp? Parameters? Type of goldfish? Size of pond? Some more info will help!

Hi thanks for your reply. My pond is 480 litres and I have 9 goldfish which range in size from 13cm to 20cm. Some of my fish are over 15 years old but the affected fish is 4-5 years old. I have a pump and biological filter on all year round. I have tested the ammonia and nitrate/nitrite levels and they are good. As it is winter the fish are semi-hibernating and obviously are not being fed. This fish looks perfectly healthy apart from the fact that I find him in different places around the pond lying on his side. If I attempt to touch him or even if I peer into the pond and look at him he swims away quite normally and then lies down somewhere else. Do you think the cold pond water temperatures may be the cause of this?

Thats quite a few goldfish for this size pond. Yes, some goldfish do not handle overwintering very well and it sounds like this is his case. Its fairly normal for a goldfish to sit on the bottom or hide as the temps drop. I would be more concerned if he was floaty or having a difficult time swimming.
