My guppy has a swollen belly. I included a picture, any idea what it could be. its in my medical tank for now. Maybe someone with experience can look at my guppy and see what it could be ? He seems to be at the bottom in hiding a lot.
It's some kind of bloat. Coax the guppy into eating a small piece of cooked pea; it's a laxative that will often clear a bloat. If other fish in the aquarium are bloated, it could be more serious.
To start, make sure the water parameters are appropriate and ammonia and nitrite are zero while nitrate is below 40 ppm. If not, change about 25 percent of the water every other day to improve water quality before medicating. Here is a list of symptoms and medications:

Bloating can be caused by constipation but in my expeirience the cause of bloating is dropsy which in many cases is the result of an internal bacterial infection. Once dropsy is in its advanced stages the guppie could lose its appetite and the scales with stick out or raise slightly due to a build up of fluid in the body tissues. You will first notice this on the belly of the guppy. In case it is constipation give all of your fish peas just in case especially if you are feeding them freeze dreid foods because they are known for causing constipation.
In conjunctin with this feed your fish food with fish freindly antibiotics cooked into it. If you can not find any try using an antibiotic on the whole tank that soaks through the skin and gills. Most antibiotics that do this are part of the furan derivitives family. Although I have not had much success with this with this method. Just act fast because usually it is too late by the time the scales are sticking out.
Water Hardness is Hard
Hes not really interested in eating so I'm scared its dropsy but I'll try both. Hes not eating the peas. But for a change in diet I'm feeding all my fish pees for a few feedings just to change it up. Furan-2 I have already but I'll contact the local fish store (not pet store) and inquire about the food tomorrow. Problem was today was a holiday so no real fish store were open so might just use it.
Since water quality appears to be good if the test results are accurate, the aquarium may need antibiotics as recommended above.
Mine looked like that and could only float with his head pointing upwards. I tried a variety of meds unaware his tank water was bad.
Ive just found the same one of our guppys has a bloated stomach he had big poo this morning but almost as if he was struggling. he seems to be swimming near the top head pointing upward water is fine all levels are right other fish all fine. Does the pea thing work?
Yes, the pea thing does work if it's constipation. It's a very healthy and noninvasive treatment for your fish, IMO. It's not going to cause harm if it turns out to not be constipation.
You can use frozen peas, be sure they are unsalted/unflavored. Cook a small amount, (microwave is fine)skin a pea, and mash it up a little. You don't want baby food, only bites a fish can eat easily. You will want to be close by so you can remove any uneaten pea. They do make a mess.
i had that same problem.i poured some drops of fish antibiotics.all is well now.
dose the pea have to be cooked
yes. cook the pea for 1 - 2 minutes.
What about a can pea
My fish has a bloated tummy too I just noticed nd seems to be at the bottom of the tank but still tries to swim. I had noticed a few days ago how he seemed not himself and stuck around by the heater. Now he's all bloated. Would a canned pea work
Please do not post on old posts. It pushes new important posts out of the way. If you have a question please start a new post.
This seems like an important topic regardless of age. New posts that are created hog up server space. Readers should always review older topics to find answers. Besides, because it was reposted as new it became the first thing google pointed me towards as it would others.
It is a great idea to review old posts for answers, just it is not good to comment or post questions there as it pushes newer posts out of the way. These newer posts likely have a unsolved problem, unlike older posts which have already been resolved.
My fish looks just like yours! He too is bloated! I have him some blood worms! Hope it works!
My fish looks so much worse than those like she's super bloated I'm not sure if this is dropsy or she's constipated I'm going to try the pea thing but I don't think I have an antibiotics and I don't know how to check my water
Oh I thought I would add she was only with another female so I doubt she is pregnant and the other female guppy died last week
It might be pregnant
Hey just wanna let you know back when I posted my reply my fish died about a week later. However I hope this helps... But look at the pictures I have this is my other fish as you can see about a week ago he was extremely bloated, I took him out of the tank took everything out and did a 90% water change and he looks good as new in 1 week! Hope that helps your fish!
My fish died shortly after posting sadly I was too late it happened so fast though so I have to watch out for the others
One of those see through fish looks a bit bloated. I'd do a water change anyways!
My guppy is like that too. His belly is VERY swollen and he's not swimming around as usual. I fed him a pea but he wasn't interested, the others ate it though! I removed the shell and mashed it up but he ignored it altogether. The other 2 big guppies are fine but he is not moving. I only got him exactly a week ago and I don't want him to die!
This is a old thread.
Please post your own thread with your question.
I totally get what you are trying I've tryed this too but I swear a full water change will do the trick! But you must do it asap!
A long string of poo came out just now, does anyone know what that means? I'm not going to feed them for a day or 2 is that OK for them? How do you do a full water change? Sorry I'm a
Beginner. I changed 10% of the water this morning but not the gravel... Is that a problem?
Please post your own thread, you will get better help and thise is a old thread.
Yes they will be fine with no good for a day or two. If you arent able to do a water change can you change the filter?
Yes that's fine
