Someone gave me an old tank, but the glass is green. How do I remove the algae. tried the usual 'house hold stuff' but obviously don't want to use brillo... Any suggestions please....

if the tank has no water in it yet, go to a pet store and pick up a scruby made for use on aquarium glass and try vinegar and scrub scrub scrub, also try a razor blade but be careful not to scratch the glass or cut urself.

Old credit cards are good too, and less likely to scratch glass.

I've always managed to get old algae off with hot water and a piece of plastic (nylon scraper, algae brush, etc). If you need to go the chemical route, I've heard that muriatic acid will do a nice job, but it requires special handling. I've never found vinegar to be effective, and I don't care for the smell either.

Someone gave me an old 30 gallon tank that had been outdoors dry for so long the lime seems to have etched the glass. Razor blades and vinegar won't touch it. Maybe a solution of pool acid would work, but it also burns holes in your clothes. On an aquarium website, I read a very clever alternative use for such aquariums. They work pretty well for starting seeds in the winter, and seeds are much cheaper than transplants. Next December, I'll try starting some tomatoes or peppers in it and will report back on the results.
