Ray: Welcome to our forum. Your question is a bit out of my league unless you're referring to a particular design style for planted aquariums. So far as the "natural" part goes, it's important to remember that an aquarium is a closed ecological system that needs to be kept in balance by outside interference. That's us.

A good way to start with a planted aquarium is to mix a clay based substrate such as laterite or Flourite with gravel, and fill the tank with easy to grow plants. I don't understand all the chemistry involved, but a planted aquarium needs to be fairly heavily planted in order to thrive. If you bought an aquarium with a standard, one tube light, you will have better success with low light plants like Java fern, etc. Check out Aquabid.com for a variety of plant sources. Since the low light plants are slow growing, you might want to add a few plastic plants to start your aquascape. When planning your aquarium setup, also make sure the fish, plants, and water chemistry are all compatible.

I hope all this rambling has answered at least some of your questions. Please feel free to ask more questions and hope that one of our more knowledgeable members has better answers.
