A colony of beneficial bacteria will eliminate the nitrite problem. Does the aquarium also have ammonia? Depending on the size of the aquarium, it can take a month or more for it to go through it's nitrogen cycle. Our blogs have more details about the nitrogen cycle, but it basically involves growing a colony of beneficial bacteria. If you add a small amount of flake food every day or so, the bacteria colony will develop faster. Live plants also help. Before you add fish, be sure that ammonia and nitrite are both at zero.
