We have a new addition to our family - a Crowntail Betta "Mufasa." We purchase water from the pet store, tested the pH level, equlized the tempature and put him in. He was a little sluggish this morning but much active tonight. However the water was very cloudy and had a film over the top. I called the pet store they told me to change the water. So I changed the water and tested it again. Nitrate (no 20) 150 + Nitrite 10.0 + Alkalinity 0 and pH 7. How do I get the Nitrate adn the Nitrite levels corrected?

The aquarium should be cycled before adding fish. Several of the blogs and regular postings have information about the nitrogen cycle. Very briefly, it involves growing beneficial bacteria that neutralise ammonia and nitrite, which are produced by fish, food and plant wastes. For now, you can minimise the toxins by doing partial water changes every day until ammonia and nitrite stay at zero.
