Rainbow fish come in different varieties, none cheap, and sometimes you can save money by purchasing a spawning mop full of eggs. A good place to start looking is Aquabid.com. Angela raises and sells rainbow fish, and she'll have more information on the subject.

Mops are the best way to buy Rainbows in my opinion.

Most adult bows are going to be high... say... $25.00 for one adult of an easy to find variety. The harder to find bows will be considerably more.

That being said... I sell mops for $15-$20 each. Plus shipping, and heat pack in these weather conditions this time of year.

What do you need to raise a mop? Well... a 10 gallon tank for starters. Devoted ENTIRELY to just your mop. NO OTHER FISH. A heater that will bring the tank to 80 degrees, and an airstone.

Voila! That's it. If you get the mop from me, I provide a starter culture of Vinegar eels as first foods.

Now... Why are the adults so expensive? For good reason! It takes a good 8 months to grow them into any size... And that won't get you to the $25.00 size at the LFS. Perhaps a year or more to get to that size.

Mops are fun, if you want one, let me know.
