Geez, I feel so stupid asking this... I've always lived in homes with well water when I kept fish. I recently moved into the city and now have chlorinated water. So much so that my tap water is at the same chlorine level as my pool.

When doing water changes in my 120 gal fw aquarium, I have been doing it one gallon at a time - walking back and forth between a sink and my aquarium, adding de-chlorinator to each pitcher of water before I pour it into the tank.

Is it OK to drain down 20%, add de-chlorinator to the aquarium and slowly refill it? Or should I start adding the water and simultaneously start adding the dechlorinator. OR was I doing it the only correct method all along?

This whole chlorinated-water thing has got me frustrated... 24 trips to the sink is just tiresome.

Thanks,

Oh yeah, my chlorine level is consistently about 1.5 ppm.

I bet !

I think you are doing it the safest way but you could add the de-chlor to the tank & then add the water.

ALternative would be to get a large container (rubbermaid?) and put it beside the tank when you are doing water changes. Fill that with a hose, add the dechlor, get the temperature right & then either use a bucket or a small pump to get the water into the tank. If you use a new hose watch out that you don't get one that's heavily impregnated with anti fungicide - some of them are.

No way pool = tap. If it is - better find a new home for your fish soon. You won't be around to take care of them.

Pythons are the best investment I have ever made. I too used to lug water from all 5 tanks with buckets and 1 of them is a 125 with Oscars. With the python I am done in about an hour before it was an afternoon job. I too just add the dechlorinator to the tank and then flip the valve and filler up. works like a charm. Fish never seemed to be bothered.I do try to match water temp the best I can.
