my ant just gave me a 60GL tank, i just buy a Jebo 828 filter. Uncle gave me 6 2inch discus, and i have 10 neon tetra. Now the discus in the corner, and very shy. Please tell me anything you know on discus. how much water change use tap water. Oh god don't want them to die.......... So help me please
OK this is what i did after i got the tank, i clean everything include the media in the back, because the water come out thou 3L of media then thou the pump back of the tank. I put everything back and fill up the water.
I buy 5 goldfish they live in for 1 month, and very healthy. I told my uncle i may want to have discus fish later, but discus like to live very learn water, and i may get the external filter. So i got the filter, and clean it with water.
I took out 5GL of Water from the tank, into the container, and i run the new filter input output thou that 5gl container, i thought the bacteria live in the water, that why i bought bacteria booster to put in that container.
Only for two days, my Uncle he got me 6 discus and frozen bloodworm. I don't know what to do, so i took out the goldfish, and old pump out. Connect the external filter in. it still water come out thou the 3 layer of media then the water suck into the external filter then back to the tank. I bought the gravel clean with water before i put into the tank. I run it for like 3hrs, the temperature is 82 before i put the discus in.

Welcome to our forum, and congratulations on the new aquarium. Discus are a very delicate fish, so they need ideal conditions. Did you clean the filter media or the gravel before you set up the new aquarium? Beneficial bacteria live mostly in the gravel and filter media, so if it's all perfectly clean, you may not have a beneficial bacteria colony. The bacteria basically convert waste products to harmless things. Without them, the aquarium will have ammonia and nitrite, both of which are toxic to fish. If a water test shows any trace of those two chemicals, you need to dump in some bacteria. The local pet shop should sell bottles of live bacteria, or they may have a product called Eco-complete, which is a wet, black gravel that already has the live bacteria. Some of our blogs explain the beneficial bacteria and the nitrogen cycle in more detail.
Assuming the aquarium is properly cycled, make sure the water temperature is around 82 or 84. If you need to raise the temperature, do it slowly (several hours).
The third thing that could be wrong is the shock of moving. Even if all the conditions are ideal, transferring a fish to a new aquatic environment can shock (weaken) its immune system. The drip acclimation method is best, and we even have a blog about that, too.
Finally, if everything is just perfect, moving still bothers the fish enough to temporarily change their behavior. Hiding out and loss of appetite are good examples. Leaving out the aquarium lights for a day will sometimes help them adjust. Be sure to feed no more than they eat in a couple of minutes, and don't worry if they eat nothing for a few days. Uneaten food is a major source of ammonia. It's also a good idea to avoid expensive chemical fixes. All you need is a good water conditioner and regular, partial water changes.

Hi and welcome!! A couple of us here keep discus including myself. I will straight of tell you your discus are in trouble. The tank and filter are fine, but there is no good bacteria built up in them to handle the waste produced by the fish and their food. I recommend doing daily 50% water changes until your tank is established. This could take weeks even months. Also, once you discus are comfortable with you they will start to come out more. They may have been stressed by the change in water chemistry when they were moved. I strongly suggest you purchase a test kit and test for ammonia(deadly needs to be 0), nitrite(deadly), and nitrates(harmful in higher quantities, should be less than 20 ppm). Oh wait, it looks like John beat me to an answer so you are probably getting double information. He is a great source for info and has many years of experience. Take his advice and you should be fine. I would however like to add that you may want to consider treating your discus for parasites. This is usually what quarantine is for, but obviously this is a new set up with all new fish. Some people de-worm their discus as a preventative and others wait until they show signs of and infestation. It is up to you on what you decide. If you do decide to let me know and I will recommend some meds for you.

discus is one of the most fasinating fish in anyone's aquarium...but it seems that your aquarium cond is not good, the driftwood you use how old age is of that?is it capable of holding bacteria?for a discus aquarium do 40 5 water change in every week and give "tetra bits" as food, at the same time you must concern that you should not proide extra food ,because it can cause ammonia and nitrite level high..so do a test kit as mr john and megham said earlier..your discus is shy because of too many condition..what is the water temp?it must be always 30 deg centigrate...what is the lighting cond?it must be 2-3 watt per gallon..what are the bottom feeder?you have no bottom feeders so to high the ammonia and nitrite level..do you know that discus loves hiding?so provide them some hiding places,at the same time provide them a comparatively peace and calm conidition...in my blog i wrote about discus tips, you may concern that...and ok i'll write another blog about "discus care" with in a few days, that helps to solve your problem...
thank you..

Megham i did bought a test kit. I test this lastnight the count is PH=6.5, AMMONIA=0.25, NITRITE= 0.50, NITRATE=5.0, and i did 50% waterchange right away. tonight i will test it again. So i keep 50% water change until the ammonia=0 right?
One more question, I have some real driftwood i shock them in a bucket of water for 6 days now, and i change that water every 2 days. So when can i put into the tank or can i?

Most people put the driftwood in as soon as it stops leaching tannins into the water. If the piece is small enough I usually boil it for about half an hour. This helps tannins get released faster and kills anything bad things that may be living in it.
As for the discus, if you cannot get your ammonia to 0 asap I suggest purchasing an ammonia detoxifying conditioner such as amquel to use temporarily. This will keep the ammonia from burning your poor fishes gills and causing them stress while the tank cycles. However, it will also mess up the results of your test kit and give you a false reading. Discus just don't do well with ammonia. Keep up the water changes and things should hopefully right themselves soon. A.25 reading is pretty high so please get is a low as possible as fast as possible. The nitrite is also dangerous and should be 0. I strongly suggest reading John's blog on the nitrogen cycle. That way you will know what to expect and you can know how close you are to being done with the cycle.

driftwoods need some treatmeny before it is given to your aquarium,it will be min of 1 month pour in the water, even you use KMNO4 to disinsecticides it,as megham said you may boil it into the water, after that it'll be clean and ready to use,you must aware that this driftwood is throughly clean, the driftwood will be better as old as you can get...
for discus aquarium i'll say that your ph level will be 7,that is ideal...ammonia and nitrite level must be 0...

If your canister filter is anything like my ehiem canister filters they need to have the water siphoned into them for them to pump. Have you tried emptying all the water out of them and starting from scratch? It is possible a part needs to be replaced, but I am not sure which one it might be. Sorry I cannot be of more help.
