just a quick newbie question, if i have the aqueon 55 gallon tank set up (aqueon power filter) do i still need a protien skimmer or does this filter system do the job?

I'm not familiar with that particular system, but if it's sold as a complete system, you probably don't to add anything. It's usually best to keep things as simple as possible when you're getting started.

no the aqueon will not do the job of a protien skimmer. the protien skimmer is purely a biological filter. with added bonus.

The above link will give you the indepth details of the ins and outs of protien skimmers. if you want a your reef system to look like the the real fancy ones on tv and at places like the Shedd Aquarium, you'll want to think about adding one!!
