I just got a 40 gal tank. set it up yesterday and set temp and let filters go all day/overnight. We went to our pet shop and picked out our fish: red parrot cichlid, Bala shark, Roseline shark, and an Angelfish. The pet store employee assured us they would be compatible. Is this true? I have the tank set at 80 degrees and im trying to figure out ph now... Any help is appreciated. This is my first tropical tank. Thanks.

Your local fish shop wanted you out of the store without thought for your fish. Your angel will be fine for the time being but they often become agressive when they mature, your bala is a shoaling fish and will suffer if he is alone...he would be happier with several other balas. They are timid fish and may not be able to handle the angels agression. He also gets very big...1+ feet long and they need a very long tank as they are fast swimmers. Your roselike shark (a kind of barb) is schooling and will also do better with several of his kind.

On top of this, your fish also would appreciate a cycled tank. All fish produce ammonia, which is toxic to them. A cycled tank has bacteria that feeds on Ammonia but it takes quite a while tomdevelop sufficient bacteria and it is best done without fish so their exposure is minimum.

What's up with using my screen name?

If you go to the 'My Pages' drop down, there is an option for 'My Profile', all of your recent post will be at the bottom of the page.
