All depends on how bad your tap water is. For an example, NYC tap has a PO4 range of 1~2ppm. W/o the DI, I still get a 0.25ppm PO4 reading after RO filtration. I need that 4th DI stage to achieve 0.0 ppm reading per Salifert.

In general, three stage will not filter out all of the PO4 and silica, so it is much better to go with a 4 stage unit.

Most of the 4 stage RO/DIs that is good enough for reefkeeping that I know of has this layout ... 1. Sediment, 2. Carbon, 3. RO, 4. DI

5, 6, 7 stages have different layouts compared to 4 stage units. I know many 7 stage that has 3 DIs at the end. So you know the 4th isnt DI.

All true, but I think Kyle was pointing out that if you go to HD or Lowes to get an RO/DI. the 4th stage is usually not a DI.. therefore be careful.. Rod Buehler

I could be wrong, but I dont recall seeing a filter sold at HD or Sears has DI, so the naming of RO/DI should automatically remove those filters from the selection.
