While at my LFS this evening getting feeders for my reptiles I saw a cool fish. It was a small shark. It had a black body with white polka dots all over it. It also had a downturned mouth not the normal toothy grin. What kind of shark is this and how big will it get. Would it be ok for a 30 g tank all by its lonesome? How bout a 55g?
Vicki
(just curious, it was cheap enough to think about a marine tank setup)

Sounds like what's refered to in the trade as a Leopard Shark. It is a true shark, and does not do well in an aquarium. IMHO, they shouldn't even be imported but they are. In many states all SW sharks are illegal (as they are here in Arizona...makes sense what with all our beachfront property! =) ) They are very sensitive to disolved nitrates and many times get bacterial infections from rubbing there sensitive skin against rocks and corals. They are also difficult to feed; while they will eat it's hard to get them the right nutrition. If you have to get one, it should be in a 100+ gallon tank. I'd skip on it though.

Thanks. I will not bother buying it. I was just curious tho. We have sharks here all the time in the local stores. This one was just very attractive and I was wondering if it would stay relatively small.

I agree completely. I once did maintainance work in a public aquarium (in 8 m depth they relied on the local diving community to volunteer). They had a selachian tank too, with several small and medium sized sharks and rays, including a leopard shark. You need a realy big tank for the critters to swim in. Then get quite tame and can be hand fed, about once a week with fresh fish offal. Most trusting are nurse sharks, they actually swim through between your shoulder and your air hose.
Nice memories, but definetly something for professionals.

Hi...One of the LFS's here in Ottawa has a large tank with either a nurse or a reef shark in it along with dogfish and the sharks seem to be very happy. The LFS I am talking about is the Big Als. They have a web site as well but not too sure what it is.
