Bubbles the Rock eater
Guest

my daughter just got a beta a couple of days ago. it has seemed to be doing fine so far, eating, seeems happy etc. Today was our first water change...after we rinced off the rocks and put them back in a few small pices of rock were floating on the top...when we put "Bubbles" back in we saw him gulp down one of the floating rocks....we watched to see if he would spit it out and he didnt.......uh oh! is there anything we can do and why do you think he did this? Thanks

first of all you shouldn't clean off the rocks in your tank. you are removing the good bacteria that help get rid of the ammonia and nitrite in your water. and leave the fish in there. Only do partial water changes about 30-40 percent. How big is your tank? or is the betta in a bowl. bowls bad tanks good. I would suggest you get a 5 or 10 gallon tank. add some decorations, gavel for the bottom, a filter and a water test kit...I know, I know, it can get spendy but if you want to keep the fish alive for a long time then you need to invest some money into having a healthy and happy fish, especially if it is your daughter's first fish. Google the problem. He will probably spit it out (I hope).

mommomkris is right.
If he doesn't spit it out, feed him boiled, shelled peas. depending on the size of the rock he might poop it out. If the rock is too big it will stay in there forever.

thanks for the reply. When we went to the pet store 3 different people told us that a 12 gallon bowl is all they needed! Weird as you'd think they'd try to sell us something bigger. I thought it seeemed kind of small, so we got a gallon tank, but then we thought they were the experts and we dont know anything!
So we have had him just a few days......he never did spit out the rock that we know of but he seems fine. We just did the first water change the day...and we did chance the entire water as someone also sad that even though the instructions aid do 50% water changes and keep it at 75-80, we should keep it cleaner and therefore do the whole tank. I just figured the rocks would need to be cleaned too...oops!!!
Another concern.....the package of food flakes has two contridicting instructions on it. On one sections it says to feed the fish once a day, enough for him to ear for 3o seconds. The other place says feed 2-3 times a day enough for them to eat for 2 minutes!!! It is crazy..2 completely diferent instructions on the same package!! Then we looked up some stuff and it said only a few flakes a day fr a few days and then take a day off?? WHy is it so hard to find out how to really take care of a fish? We just want to take care of it...we have only had him a few days and already love our little Bubbles. So we have been giving him about 5 flakes a day for the last 5 days...he is pooping and seeems happy, but he does always look t us like he wants food! We read that they do not know when to stop eating and it is easy to overfeed? what are your thoughts on food ? We dont want to starve him either........
next time I wont clean the rocks...we just rinced them off really good, no kind of cleaner of course, and then out fresh water and water conditioner in it...then dumped him back in with his leftover pint of water that he was in whiel we cleaned.......anything else you can share would be appreciated,...everywehre we go for info we are being told something different and it is confusing,.....we just want a happy fishy...:0 Thanks!!!! Sunny

back to the rocks...just leave them in the tank...no rinsing. feeding...only what he can consume in a 1-2 minutes and only once or twice a day, no more. And if you "forget" to feed him that day, don't worry. So if you leave for a couple of days, don't feed him "extra" food cause that would hurt him. Fish can "fast" for couple of days or so just not more that three days. If you plan to go away for a week or so then have someone come in to check on hime and feed him. make sure that person doesn't overfeed him. I have occasionally forgoten to feed my goldfishes and they were happy. also fish know that when you come to the tank they are expecting food. Fish act hungry but they are not.
There is a betta forum on this site tht provides excellent info on care of getta. also look at other betta entries from other folks. that is what I do and I learn from advice that everybody gives to everybody else.
btw you don't want to stress your betta too much and taking him out while you change water will stress him. Just leave him in the tank and scoop out the water or if you can get a water syphon from a pet store you can syphon the water out. syphoning is so mush easier! If you change the water (since it is a small tank) do it on a daily or bi weekly basis that should keep your tank healthy.
I'm glad I can help you out with your questions. The experts were beginner fish parents also. They became experts by reading up on what to do and asking questions. I love helping another fish mom, especially when their children are involved. Read my blog about becoming a fish mom. Also if I have helped you in any way, give me a thumbs up (if you want)! Kinda like a like on facebook.
If there is anything else you have questions on just keep asking.

I HAD ALMOST THE SAME PROBLEM! Not the rock eating but the "cleaning".. I also have a male betta. His name is Prince Naveen (my 6yr old named him, he is actually our 2nd.. Ariel died frm ick).. I went 2 "clean his tank" n went CRAZY! I cleaned EVERYTHING! the tubes, air stones, glass, rocks, ALL OF IT! what happened was the AMMONIA was WAY too high. I took out all the GOOD bacteria u need 2 "cycle" ur tank properly. MEANING.. the slime n "good" bugs were gone frm he water. YES it was clean.. but TOO CLEAN! go figure.. fish can get TOO clean right? I assumed that cause the water was "dirty" when I was vacuuming it that Naveen wld get sick. In fact!! its the OPPOSITE! I KNO theres soooooooooooo much info out there n every1 has their own opinions.. As a fish owner u hve 2 pick n choose wat 2 do n wats best 4 YOUR fish ya kno.
#1 DONT CLEAN OUT ENTIRE TANK! yes do a water change. (take out old water n add new "treated" water)..
#2 vacuum rocks.. THATS IT! (LEAVE the"slime" alone! its GOOD bacteria)
#3 TEST UR WATER LEVELS! (its IMPERATIVE!! Fish cant talk. they cnt tell u tht their skin is burning!)
#4 ONLY feed as much as it will eat in 3 min. OTHERWISE ur gona hve the SAME problems I HAD! (TOOOOOOOO much wasted food on bottom of tank)
#5 FISH NEED ROOM 2 SWIM! A "bowl" isnt enough. I KNO it gets pricey.. but its WELL worth it! They like 2 hide, swim and explore their environment.
#6 Keep at it! And in no time.. U will hve a healthy happy fish!
... YES.. its a lot of work @ 1st.. but I PROMISE, u will b HOOKED! U will find urself doin research n takin interest in Bubbles. THIS SITE is the BEST! EVERY1 is soooooo nice! I was a WRECK 2wks ago. Now.. Naveen is happy n healthy again. Ive learned my lesson the hard way.. jst tryn 2 help. Mayb If I share my story no1 else will make the same mistakes ya kno.

OH.... Fish get stressd VERY easily. lol. Go figure right.. so a lot of handling will stress him out. water changes stress them out...etc. So IF u notice A LITTLE bit of "slime" stuff somming off of him... its OK. They hve a natural slime coat 2 protect them. When they r stressed they produce a lil xtra.. some might come off.. its when its ALL OVER his body n falling off EVERYWHERE thts the problem (its calld ick, but cld also b a fungal infection too..research when the time comes). So DONT wig out if u notice a smidge of it.. (like I did.. I added meds, kept changing water.. n eventually she died. was a sad sad day @ the smith house. RIP Ariel 7/12/13-8/25/13)

Hope this helped a little. Did u get a heater? what kind of filter do u have? Is bubbles a male or female?

I will definitely give you a thumbs up,,,,as soon as I figure out how! I clicked on it but it wouldnt let me. THANK YOU again for the great info. Okay, we are probably going to be getting Bubbles a bigger tank.I feel sorry for him now thinking he'd be happier in a bigger home to move around more. And when we change the water we'll only change half of it, condition the new water, and get it going. We also just ordered him a Betta Hammock....it looks fun and we want to get him something to hide in..right now all he has is some fake folliage stuff.
I think I told you that since we've had him we've only been giving him about 5 flakes/day. I wonder if we have been starving him? Tonight we put a good-sized pinch of the flakes in, wayyyy more than 5, and timed him eating them. It took him about 2 minutes. The feeding part i most confusing as it sounds like everyone feeds differently. Today a friend told me she gives her 5 pellets a day and that is it..she has had hers for 4 years....maybe pellets are more nutritional than the flakes? Also, we hear about the blood worms and giving them some variety..what do yoou think about that?
Oh, and the stressing them out.....yes, from now on we can leave him in the tank....we caught him in a cup last time we cleaned it out...also, yesterday I held a flake in my fingers right at the water line to see what he would do and he took it from my fingers......Bubbles is so cute...just hope he hasnt been starving!! Also, dont want to overfeed him...
THANKS!!! I'll read your blog too....

HI there! Thank you for the great info. Poor Ariel..it is sad when all we wan to do is make the little fishy happy and then we cant make it better. I really appreciate your tips as am finding it hard too get answers. This site has been great so far.......love it!
Bubbles is a male. I ant remember what kind he is, but he is blue with a pretty tail but not the kind that really really fans out.
I a goig to get him a bigger house. It is a bowl...they had told me at the petstore that a bowl was fine...they actualy said a 1/2 gallon was all her needed...we got a gallon tank as felt it was bigger and he'd be happier....now we understand we need ever bigger. We do not have a heater, or a filter.....we have had him 5 days and changed the water yesterday....took him out in about a pint of his water, cleaned and filled the tank with new water and then dumped him and his old pint of water back in.....hope he doesnt get ick...that doesnt sounds fun at all!! And now we will leave him in the tank when we clean....
We were only feedig him 5 flakes of food a day...that is wat the box said to feed. Now we are hearing that people feed much as fish can eat in 2 min, 1 min or 3 minutes...Iwonder if we have been starving him? Today I held a flake at the water surface and he took it out of y fingers.....I thought it was cute but maybe it was the act of a desperate, starving fish? We gave him a big pinch of food tonight that took him about 2 minutes to eat and he seemed pleased with that. We also ordered him a betta hammock and cant wait to get that to see if he likes it and hangs out on it......
We just lost our Golden retriever of 14 years in Dec, so we certainly dont want to lose our new little fishy now....

You want to do a 20-40percent change 50 percent is to much when he is moved to the five gallon and if you feed them the amount of food there eyes are big.A heater will help to flakes are not a good diet they are for herbivores not carnivorous fish pellets and frozen blood worms and freeze dried foods.I have frozen blood worms and frozen brine shrimp.I have freeze dried Daphnia, mysis, and blood worms.I also have pellets.

bubblesgrandma, like I said you can't starve a fish by feeding him less (you were feeding him every day). about the thumbs up you can click on my name and my profile will come up whereas you can give me that thumbs up and/or a message.
As to the food you might want to also get pellets along with the flakes and see what other foods that bettas like. Fish love variety. wWith our goldfish I even made some homemade food for them and I give that twice a week.

I use both. I alternate.. ! day flakes, nxt pellets.. jst so he DOES hve tht variety. I hvnt used the frozen stuff yet since I hve OCD n fear sum of it will fall 2 the bottom of the tank n it will KILL ME NOT 2 clean the tank out! (hahahaa) so.. I hvnt tried it. I also wna try the "peas". Get a frozen or fresh pea n peel it. then take teeny tiny pieces (like his pellets) n drop in like u wld when feeding. I hope he likes it! lol.. itll b his "end of week" treat 4 bein such a good boy
SOON as u get $$ U MUST get a heater. They thrive & live in WARM climates. (btween 78-82 degrees ) As SOON as I added MY heater.. Ariel (RIP 7/12/13-8/25/13) LOOOOOOVED it! She was SO much MORE active! She was active b4 (swam around n all tht jazz) but WHOOOOA BABY!!! THEN.. had 2 buy a thermometer!! (see what I mean by "pricy&quot bcause I wanted to MAKE SURE the heater was WORKING the way it shld. (I SWEAR Ive been on this comp MORE this summer than the 2yrs ive had it just doin research alone on "bettas" LOL) Luckily, I ddnt get a bum heater! Pheww!(((When u do ur water changes..MAKE SURE.. I REPEAT.. MAKE SURE UR HEATER IS OFF!! If the heater is ON n the water lvl goes BELOW the water mark line, it might BURN UP or BURN OUT. Ur directions shld tell ya. If it breaks, than thts MORE $$ 2buy a NEW 1. smh))) And u NEED a filter of some kind! W/out it, the tank WILL get dirty quick! Then theres like 6 or 7 things u NEED 2 check w/ the water itself. Water has 2b clean.. like no chlorine, chloramine, heavy metals, etc. Ur gna need a water conditioner 2 REMOVE all tht stuffs. (nice sized bottle will cost like $4-$10.00 *pending on store and sale price*) Filters run frm like $12-$85, again *pending on price and size*) they have UNDERwater gravel systems, they have HOB systems (HANG ON BACK of tank). They have 1s tht require filter pads, BIO wheels, carbon rox...etc. (LOTS OF RESEARCH and reading every1s complaints and good things.. I read the reviews on PetSmart. 99% of their items hve reviews) To mke water changes faster.. u cn get a siphon or a "gravel vacuum" (u CAN "UTube videos on how 2 use it.. LOOKS scary but is SUPER easy! And FAST!) It sucks up all the poo, old food, and debris frm the bottom of the tank n frm the coral rox. DONT clean the foliage/bubble walls/air stones/etc for ALL OF IT prob has like a slimey film 2 it right? Thts GOOD bacteria. NEEDS 2b there Once u got like 25%-50% of the water out (frm vacuuming the rox) add CLEAN water back in slooooowly. dnt wana stress him out by DUMPING the water in the tank. The force will make him swirl around.. prob freak him out.
"CLEAN" water... a.k.a treated water.. Pet stores sell ALL KINDS of water "conditioners". I use API tap water conditioner. Its a lil more expensive (bcause its "name brand".. like PetSmart's brand is Top Fin..) I have FOUR 1gal water jugs tht I ALWAYS keep filled and sitting out. (jst in case theres a problem or if he gets sick, got clean water ready 2go..and when the water evaporates btween changes) I ALWAYS add the water conditioner 2 the JUGS and NOT in the tank. 1 drop per jug.. simple right? Then I add the CLEAN water. You WILL see debris floatin all around.. ITS OK! (this is where I made my OOOPSIE... I "assumed" tht the debris wld kill Naveen or make him sick if he tried 2eat the nasty ish..and did a 100% WC and all my ammonia lvls went crazy)
Once the clean water is in.. I ALWAYS use Water Clarifier. It was about $5-$6 and frm Top Fin (PetSmart).. it COATS suspended particles, making then easier for the filtration system to trap. WORKS WONDERS in the 10gal tank! (also used it in Ariels old 3gal tank since I ddnt have a filter system in it..Found myself cleanin her tank EVERY week cause it was too small n didnt hve filter.. ugh! such a pain!)
Then after about 20-30 min or so I test the lvls in the tank. Check your Ammonia, pH, Hardness, Alkalinity, Nitrate, and Nitrite lvls. THAT test kit is prob the MOST expensive thing for a fish! (2nd wld b the tank and/or filter system).. I currently have the 5 in 1 test kit (its in a box and was like $5.. it was all I had so I bought it, PROBLEM IS... ONLY comes w/ 5 strips.. IF u hve a prob w/ 1 of ur lvls.. 5 strips cn go in 2 days!.. BIG test kit comes w/ bottles and test tubes, MORE than enough 2get by for a while..lol) Think in TOTAL Ive spent close to $200. 50% of it was coral rox, fake plants, pink castle tunnel thingy, air stones (diff shapes n sizes), Rock wall tunnel w/ attached long air stone which when FULLY turned on makes a wall of bubbles, etc. Some stuff I exchanged 4 diff color of the same thing, or something bigger/smaller/cheaper...etc. BUT this was also over a 3 month period..lol (well worth it in the long run! U get a happy bubbles and a happy mommy )

Now.. Feeding. Reason WHY every1 has a DIFF opinion on HOW and WHEN 2feed their fish is simple.. Every person is diff. Some eat a lot while others "pick" all day long. Some ppl like meat, others dnt eat meat.. JUST LIKE US.. Fish r the same. Ariel ate WAT EVER I GAVE HER.. Naveen.. is picky! if the pellet isnt TINY, he spits it out n looks for anothr 1. He doesnt like the flakes as much as the pellets. Kind of just looks @ me like "R U SERIOUS MOM?" No matter wat time of day, if I go 2 the tank, he swims around all crazy thinkin hes gona eat (such a piggie!) He likes 2 beg. DONT FEED bubbles jst cause he swims 2 u. Or youll hve WAY too much wasted food (which causes spikes in ur "lvls&quot and hve 2 do a water change sooner than u wld like.

Hope ALL OF THIS doesnt discourage u frm bein a great betta mommy! I KNOW I can ramble on n on.. n Im sorry if it seems like it. Im a "detailed" person w/ OCD and severe anxiety.. LMBO!! And I also kno wat it feels like 2b a 1st time owner of such a beautiful fish and NOT kno wat 2do. Or think Im doin the RIGHT thing when in fact its wrong ya kno.
Who wld of thought takin care of a FISH wld b soooo hard ya kno!? hahahahaaa!... If u have ANY questions.. evn if u think its dumb or weird.. PLEASE ASK! Im here 4 ya babe!(in John Stamo's voice from Full House)<--LOVE me some Uncle Jessie! Haaaave mercy! lolollolololol !!

how ever many it will eat in 3 min. I usually feed Prince Naveen 1 pellet at a time.. making 4 total.. making SURE its NOT wasted. I ONLY give him 1 at a time 2 ENSURE he ate it and it ddnt float away or drop 2 the bottom of the tank. Every fish is different. Some eat only 3.. while others eat 5 or 6. All depends on ur fishy
Naveen will swim to the top of his tank EVERY single time he sees me.. looks like he is begging 4 food.. hence y some ppl call them begger fish..LOL!! Once a day.. wldnt give more than 5 TOPS! if u hve the time (like 6min total) feed 1 at a time. makes LESS wasted food and u dont hve 2 scoop/suck out the wasted food
...hope that helped?

I suppose I'll chime in here - not much I can add to the discussion myself except that I feed my fish three pellets twice a day. He lives in a five gallon tank with a small filter, no heater (ONLY because I live in florida - water gets a little too warm all by itself), etc.

But the reason I'm commenting, rather than to add more redundant information, is to refer you to this website: http://bettatalk.com/

Lots of information there about all things betta!

yes, very helpful....we will get Bubbles so new food this weekend so he isnt having flakes only.... bet he'll be so happy to have some variety,,..we want to get a little hidy house too. Last night when we put his hammock in the tank he swam right over to it, hopped on and looked at us like "finally, I can rest my fin!! What took ya?" It was so cute as if he knew exaclty what it was for. Yes, he is definitely a beggar... you are so very helpful! Thanks for everything.....I have been checkign the water, it is staying nicely at room temperature, but soon, when it starts getting colder, we might need to get a heater...want him to stay cozy....as for the filer .....that might be down the road a bt but for now we will stay on top of his water changes and making sure he is clean, but not too clean.....we'll take out no more than 1/2 gallon of water, (1 gallon tank is all we have right now) and then we'll refill it with conditioned water and pour it in slowly......etc.....I ave learned so much already!! Thanks.

Don't forget to test the water. I was told to test the water before a water change or 1/2 hour after a change.

we dont have anything to test the water. All we were told was to use a 1/2 cap of water conditioner for every 1/2 gallon of water, to pour in into the water nd make sure that water is kept between 75-80 degrees.....

What does the bottle say? 1/2 cap for 1/2 gal seems a bit much. You would use up the conditioner fast. My container bottle has markings for the amount for 10gal. I fill a gallon water jugs and ice cream pails and drop from the bottle a couple of drops of conditioner and that seems ok for the fish. So you have a heater to keep the temp there. You can get 5 in 1 test strips from walmart or a pet supplies shop. They are convenient and if you are on a budget then they are inexpensive. They are not real accurate but they will give you a rough idea as to what you are looking for. I just purchased my 5-1 test strips.
I'm learning also so when I receive information that is relevant to you I like to let you know!

thanks, yes, it is Nutrafin Betta Plus water conditioner. It says 1 capful treats .5 gallon on the container, but the directions that came with the bowl we have said pour in a 1/2 capful for every 1/2 gallon. So go figure!! So we used the 1/2 capful, not the full. I will get some test strips too...put it on my "fishy needs" list. Thanks....keep any info coming....
