The Bettas will need some floating plants. My personal favorite is hornwort; it's cheap and easy to grow. A few rooted plants will give the fish some necessary hiding places. Some of the low light rooted plants are java fern, crypts and anubias families. They grow slowly but are easy to keep. Of course, once you have live plants you will probably also have snails and maybe even duckweed. Live plants absorb nutrients from aquarium wastes and help keep a tank well balanced, but some people think they're too much trouble and settle for plastic.

Can you find water sprite? How about java moss? Have you checked Aquabid.com? Several of the vendors on Aquabid ship to international destinations, although they would have to comply with UK import rules. The shipping charges from the plant vendors in Malaysia are actually quite reasonable. They also advertise on ebay. Please let me know if any of these ideas help.

Several times, I've ordered plants from Malaysia. It takes a few weeks, but the plants usually arrive in good condition. I think it would be really difficult to keep them alive in a dark envelope for that long. Maybe they bulk ship to local distributors, or maybe it just takes that long to finish all the paperwork. In any case, the portions are sort of small, so order plenty. The plant descriptions usually have information about the plant's requirements, but of course they're also sales documents.

If you order from Aquatic Magic or one of the other places, please let us know what you think about them.
