I have a 55g FO tank right now with a skimmer and a filter running on it. I just heard that it is not recommended to use the filter as long as I have enough live rock in the tank (which I do). What I actually heard is that I should empty out the contents of my filter and just rely on the live rock and skimmer to get rid of the nasties. Or is there any other media that I should have in my filter. Any advice would be helpfull. Right now I have carbon, floss, and bioballs in my

This is because most filters are force flow filters, and the water flow will be too high for any area within the filter to become anaerobic hence bacteria to exist to remove nitrate.
Most recommendation is just use carbon.

Right now I have foam prefilter, carbon, floss, and bioballs. Is it okay to keep the prefilter and floss if I change it regularly. ie) once a week?

Generally the suggestion on those is clean them often, as often it not more often then you clean your skimmer. Most people do not especially with cansister filters, so we just tell people dont use them.
