If you ever raised a batch of angelfish you know that they grow at surprisingly different rates. Some never get much past pea size before they succumb to the cruel world. One good theory says that the more aggressive fish get most of the food and thus get bigger and the bigger they get the more food they get, and so on. A couple days ago I made another observation with a tank full of juveniles. When food goes into the aquarium, the smaller, slower growing angelfish fry are not much good at locating the food even if it's dumped right on top of them. Maybe they just get confused, or maybe they can't see very well, or maybe they would not be able to pass an angelfish IQ test.

Makes you think

i have noticed that bigger fish seem to be smarter, oscars and african siklids can recognize their owners. also my gouramis go to the surface for food only when i stand in front of the tank, but anyone else and they just hide. pretty cool. they like me best...
