Hi,

I know that Clownloaches will eat snails, but can anyone suggest a small fish that will?

Thanks

ok, any suggestions?

Botia Sidthimunki (Dwarf Loach, Chained Loach) was a suggested species when i was looking for fish for this tank, but they are extremely expensive in comparsion.

Botia Lohachatta grow to 4.7' so one or two of those could be an option. Are these Kuhli Loach? or are they different, as I here they can be agressive. and I wouldn't want them to attach the platies or USD catfish in the tank.

have a look here.
http://www.loaches.com/species_pages/ botia_almorhae.html

used to be called Pakistani loach. never had any trouble with them with other fish.

Sell for about £3.00-£4.00 in the UK.

Not all botia are equally good at snailing, and some specialize in pulling the snails out of their shells, while others eat snail eggs. Whatever botia you get, research a little and be prepared to educate them (reduce their other food supplies and crush a few snails in front of their nose ;~). hth

ps: Kuhlis are not botia, nor are they any good at eating snails.

Thanks for the information.

I don't have the disposable cash at the moment for the fish, as I am going on holiday at the end of the month and I have little to nothing to spend.

I will have a look, when I am back, hopefuly the snail wont be outta hand when I get back.

The Pakistani loach (Botia Lohachatta) seem to be a good optoin, as the Botia Sidthimunki were clocking on to £8 - £9.00

Thats even more than I paid for my Macracantha, so they are outta the question at the moment

I have Skunk botia in three of my tanks and they do a good job keeping the snail population down. They are relatively small - about 2' mature length - and should be fairly easy to find. Yo-Yo or Pakistani loaches also do a good job and will reach maybe 3'. I also find them locally without too much trouble. Neither of those are terribly expensive. (I don't tend to buy expensive fish.)

One thing to consider when buying a snail eating fish is the fact the fish will be there after all the snails are eaten. An easier way to limit snail population is to bait them with lettuce or chard.

I have an Indian Dwarf puffer who loves snails. In fact I am trying to raise enough snails to feed him and my cherry barbs.

If you want more snails, you can always put in a bunch of live plants. Snail eating fish are, of course, going to stay in the aquarium after the snails are almost gone.

What do you feed them when the snails are gone? I would think there would be a food out there for them....

Read before you type time, I guess--the sites all say they can eat the brine shrimp, sinking pellets and such.

But they also say they need a sandy bottom on the tank, which I do not have. I was thinking about adding laterite to the tank for the plants, which I understand can give a partially sandy like bottom, but is that accurate?
