I have a large tank with goldfish and koi. The goldfish, which is around three years old and eight inches long, has developed tail rot. I tried tea oil for a week, no visible improvement. Can anyone suggest what I can use? I would like something that doesn't effect the biological filter.

Try some aquarium salt. also I dont believe that the tail or fin rot medication will kill the bacteria in the filter. unless you are using one that is an anti bacterial medication. like tetracyclene or myacin also if you are keeping goldfish and othe barb related fish then the dip in water quality from the treatment of antibiotics will hardly affect them. goldfish are very hardy fish also if the water is not treated quickly you run the risk of infecting your other fish and creating bigger problems.
Raise the temp to about 79 - 81 degrees as this will decrease the disease's lifespan I know everyone says that goldfish are a coldwater fish but they actually thrive in warm water. (if kept clean)
Make sure your diagnosis is correct before you actually begin the treatments.
