I picked up a tank today at a garage sale for $35. It is made by 'Island'. It is advertised as a 50 gallon tank, but I took it home, measured it, did the math and found that it actually holds 44 gallons. If you measure the outside of the frame, then technically it would be 50. Is that deceptive or what?

Anyhow, it's 4 feet long and about 18' tall. Any comments on the quality or lack thereof of this tank? And any stand suggestions? I'm guessing that a coffee table would probably not work?

Most people I have seen talking here before put the treatment in the tank first and then add the tapwater if refilling via hose....

With gravel and everything, the tank should weigh more than 400 pounds, so a coffee table would be disastrous. Some of the commercial stands are made out of medium density fiberboard, which turns to mush when it gets wet. Therefore, I usually make my own aquarium stands out of common 2 by 4s, 3/4 inch plywood, wood screws and glue. With enough sanding and some paint or stain, they don't look too bad and they do hold the weight.
