I have a ten gallon tank with a problem. 1st the tank: 10 gallon with Incandesant light, heater ( running at 80 Deg) Powerhead 201, hooked into underground filter and Aquaclear Mini filter (with Charcoal and ammonia elements).

Here is the problem: I had the tank for About 1 year, a nd could not get rid of a Whitish haze in the water, I spoke with a friend (many states away, but lots of aquaria expert) and she recommended the Powerhead, and fully starting the tank from scratch. I drained the tank and put my 1 remaining fish in a bowl while I redid the tank. I cleaned the junk out of the bottom, and reset up the tank using Stress zyme and Stress Coat. All was fine for about 1 week when I put new fish in and they had spots on them after a couple of days, so I treated them with an antibiotic in Capsule form. I later added 3 fish ( what I have now is the original Swordtail, 2 clown loaches, and a clown pleco sp?). Now when ever I change the water it takes about 2 weeks to get so cloudy (green this time, algae I suspect) bad enough that I cannot see the back of the tank. What am I doing wrong? The light is rarely on, it is not sitting in the sun. There are not too many fish in it, and I have been adding the Stress Zyme (bacteria) regularly. I need help, my wife thinks I need a new tank. Any suggestions would be helpful, I don't want PETA to show up (grin), Thanks

May I ask what are you using to feed your fish?

I don't know if I can help but I have also run into this problem with my 10 gallon. It has an aquaclear 10-20 on it and when ever I change the water it gets supper cloudy a grey cloudy for about a week so I tend to clean it less even though it probly needs it the most. It's really bad right now because a fish died and I didn't find it for two days.

Try changing less water more often. Something like 15% of the water every week, that is about 1.5' to 2' of the water in a 10g tank.

I am using Nutrafin Max Ultra flake food. Feed in every other day, just as much as they can eat in about 2 minutes.

I have tried that, still no good, I was recommended even for a while to do 10% water changes daily to see if it would clear up, but after a time it would alway go

Have you taken up thier recommendation to rinse the Charcoal package before replacement? When I do, alot of Gray particles come out, and do not end up in my tank.

Try feed half as much or even a third as much every other day and do water changes of 15% of the water weekly and use a gravel cleaner. Leave the lights out for a week or two. This should stabilize the tank.

Good luck.
