Anybody have any experience with the tidal marine substrates from seachem, my lfs just got some and the aragonite comes in like three different colors (yellow, grey, and brown). I was just wondering if anyone had tried it, and if so what their opinion on it was.

I'm not familiar with that particular brand, but I would stay away from any colored sand. There are certain sands that are naturally colored, but the color is regional. There's black sand from Hawaii and..... I forgot where, but it's called Moon Sand. Also, there is pink sand and a couple other colors. But these are not man-made; they are naturally colored by volcanos in Hawaii and other things that I can't remember. I know I'm not providing a lot of information, my memory keeps failing me. Some people use black sand in their reefs but there are disadvantages to this: Light is absorbed more in the black sand as opposed to being reflected by white sands; any particle will be obviously apparent and will make the sand look very dirty. I am thinking about setting up a freshwater tank with this black sand, or maybe putting it in my nano, just because I think it would look cool. Don't get these 'colored' sands from your lfs. They are artificially colored and will foul your water and eventually fade.

Actually, I have seen this SeaChem stuff at my LFS too. The different 'colors' are each marked with a region where they are apparently taken from. I am not sure if the region is there just so you can try and make your reef like a particular region (e.g. man-colored) or if they are actually from those areas and thus naturally colored. I would look into it further if you really want the different colored aragonite.
