I have a small school of 5 cardinal tetras which got pretty badly bitten in their caudal and anal fins by a dwarf cichlid who went hyper-aggressive after its fry hatched. I've removed them to a 10 gallon tank but am unsure as how to progress on their treatment. There appears to be no infections at the edges of the fins, even though there is a lot of rips to the fins. Two have pretty extensive damage including some scale loss in the rear area and are even a bit on the thin side (perhaps too difficult to compete for food with the fin damage?), but the rest look well-fed and have various degrees of bites and rips.
Right now I have just added a mild amount of salt (1 tsp) as a treatment. I have Melafix, but I am rather leery to use it as I am allergic to it. Anything else that can be used that is not too harsh or should I take a wait and see approach?

1 teaspoon of salt (?). 2 tablespoons of salt per 5 gal. would be a mild treatment. A little salt helps stimulate the slime coat which contains antibody, but may not be enough to keep open wounds, missing scales, etc. from fungus. A half dose of QuickCure or Rid-Ich, because of the malachite green, will keep fungus from getting a foot hold.
Hmmm - it works great on fin damage and does not affect filteration - I would use it, and stay out of the tank for the next couple of weeks.........Frank
