Hi,is having two pl*co's in the same tank ok? One Plec is about 11' long, the other is 8'. Tank is 6 feet long by 2.5 feet high and 2 feet wide. Heard that plec's can attack each other, but will the large tank size help to avoid confrontations between them? Thanks.

I've done it for a while. It worked better with two different kinds of plecos. Mine were in 4 ft tanks, one 45G, one 55G.

It varies. Sometimes they stay together everywhere they go in the tank (it's really cute). Sometimes they fight like cats & dogs (and large Pleco fights are very impressive). You should have a good idea of which way they will go shortly after introduction. Generally, the answer is to not try it, as they are territorial, especially amongst the same species. In practice, you have a good chance of it working, and they are not quick to injure themselves, and you have lots of time to separate them if it does not work out. (jmo)

I was surprised to read this as I haven't read anything on Pleco's attacking each other. I have two in a three foot tank and they get along fine and keep away from one another. They do compete for the algae wafers I sometimes feed them but otherwise no problems. They did breed a couple of weeks ago (large red grape like eggs) but one of the Pleco's eat all the eggs. I guess them being male and female helps. I know they really like places to hide. I have some root which is hollow on the bottom which they use as a cave. I don't see the bristle nose for almost a week sometimes. One thing I am unsure of is feeding. I know there's algae in the tank although hardly noticeable but should the Plec's be fed additional food daily, weekly or does an established aquarium hold enough algae for them?

I try to provide a minimum of 3 food items for every type of fish. For plecos, that's natural algae, spirulina wafers and zucchini (and driftwood as the digestive). I adjust the quantity of wafers and zucchini by the quality of their algae cleaning, and the appearance of their belly. That's what has worked for me.

There's an LFS near here that has a display tank that must be 6ft x 3 feet by about 2 ft deep - kinda flat looking. If there is one 10' Pleco in there there must be a dozen. The just kind of sit on top of each other half the time - seem quite happy.

Look just behind their eyes,if there is an indentation they are not getting enough food. If there is no indentation they are getting enough food.

I have 2 12' pl*cos in my 150. They get along fine 99% of the time just following each other around. I think twice in the last year or so I have seen them smack tails at each other for a few seconds and that was all.
