Hi its me. I was wondering, is watercress safe in an aquarium? I really want some floating plats but they are too expensive. Anyway, I don't want to put a plant in my aquarium that might hurt my fish.

My guess is no. Since that's just a guess, maybe another forum member will have better information. In the interim, you could try floating a hunk of the stuff in a small glass container full of aquarium water. If it rots or stains the water, you'll know it isn't safe. Or you could smell or taste the root to see if it's bitter or pungent. Most healthy aquarium plants don't have much odor, and i have no idea what they taste like.

I know i talk about hornwort too much, but it's a good floating plant that actually helps keep the aquarium water clean, and it's usually very cheap. If you can't find it in a local aquarium shop, try Aquabid.com. If you lived near Phoenix, I could give you several bunches of the stuff. I really hope another forum member has a more encouraging answer.

PS: If it's not too cold where you live, I could try to mail you some hornwort.

I tried tasting the root, it tastes like nothing. I had already started floating it in a cup of aquarium water, it did not rot or stain, but it startd to, like, curl up on itself and sink all exept for a few leaves. Is that weird or what? I hope its not the water, all the other aquarium plants are fine. I think i will leave that plant out of my aquarium. thank you for the hornwort offer, but you mean pheonix arizona? i live in virginia, and its freezing! i will try to find some around here, if it keeps the water clean AND its cheap, i'll totally find some somehow.

Watercress probably requires a lot different growing conditions than an aquarium can provide. And yes, I do mean Phoenix, Arizona. I spent most of yesterday getting things ready for my winter garden; it rarely freezes here in the city, but if you want to see snow it takes less than two hours to drive to the mountains.
