I have a 55g tank that I have been cycling for 2 weeks with some tiger barbs (I had 10 but one wouldn't eat and died, for a total of nine). When I bought the fish the salesman talked me into some live plants (java ferns, hortwort, and not sure what else, a couple that look like nasturssiums). I really like the look of the live plants, and they seem to be doing fine. I was planning on getting some silver dollars, but from what I've read they are hell on live plants. I was thinking about some angelfish, but I'm not sure if they would get along with the barbs. I've read stories on the net about angels, and even fancy guppies getting along with them, but if anyone here has any tips I'd like to hear them. If you don't think the angels would work out maybe you could suggest a larger sized community fish that would work.

Most any loaches (yoyo, zebra, clown etc), sharks (redtail, rainbow, black etc), corys, large dither (giant danios, various larger rainbows) and plecs (algae eaters or carnivores) seem to go well with Tigers. Angels are iffy, and your chances are better if they are all raised together.

goto aquariumfish.net they have a list of all the fish that will get along. Barbs can be nipper. But from what I read the more of them you have together the more calm they get. I have 8 that are fullsize(about 3' in the tank with: 1 about 6' tall anglefish 1 fancy guppy 4 black neon tetras 1 black skirt tetra 1 platy 1 red tail shark 1collie loach (a long thin fish that looks like an eel) 3 plecs 2 cory cats 4 grass shrimp(i like the shrimp the most) 3 gouramies I have them all in a 60g planted tank with rock caves built upto three levels for them to hide in . The tank has been up for over 6 months. I run a bubble wand and two filters(an emperor 280 w/ bio wheel(for upto 55g) and a wishper 3(for upto 60g). I know my tank is at it's limit I will not add any more. I dont have any trouble with fin nipping. But I have heard horror stories that say different. The red tail messes with the barbs more then anything else. I started with barbs and added more fish. I all depends on how your babs act. Add a few at a time and see if the barbs start nipping and go from there. But go to aquariumfish.net and you will find alot of helpful info. I followed what they said about using no more than 1/4' of gravel. It makes the tank easier and faster to clean. When I do gravel vac and do my 20% water change everyother week. I hope that helps.
