Welcome to our forum. The standard advice to anyone starting in the hobby is to keep it simple. For example, a 20 gallon tank is easier to keep clean than a smaller one. Live bearing fish like guppies and platies are easier to keep than most of the egg layers. Cheap plants are easier to grow than expensive ones. A new aquarium needs to cycle for at least a month and should not house fish until the ammonia level is zero for a few days. Live plants will help the cycling process. When you buy fish, buy only a couple of pairs even if they look lost in the 20 gallon tank. Healthy live bearing fish will fill the tank with fry within a few months. That's probably too much advice, so just tell your friend to take it slow, let nature do most of the work, and sign on to myaquariumclub.com to have questions answered.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

I like guppies...

Mollies are also nice.

As well as Neon Rainbow fish!

My advice on tank size... BUY AS BIG A TANK AS YOU CAN AFFORD!!! EVEN IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT!!!
