I am looking for some black sand to use for substrate in a 125g aquarium. I don't want black gravel. I want fine black sand that will not leach any coloring into my freshwater tank. Anyone know of any cheap sources and about how much I will need for a 3 in layer.

No clue if you're in the States, or if this is just a local thing, but where I live (Georgia) several fish places sell Carib Sea brand substrates. Rather pricey, running almost to $1/pound, but they make a very nice black sand called Tahitian Moon. No leaching now for me for six months.

Other thing to do would be to call local statuary or rock suppliers (maybe even tombstone makers might know; their marble suppliers often deal in many types of stone).

But basicly what you're looking for is sand that is natually black. So you're looking either at Volcanic sand (expensive due to shipping it in), or not actually 'sand' but the waste from grinding black granite. Which, well, is sand-sized rock particles, so I guess we'll call it sand. Which of these Tahitian Moon is, I don't know.

Assuming you're doing a 6-foot by 18-inch sized 125gal (9 sq ft), I'd go for 90 to 100 pounds of sand. That is based on me having a 20H (2 square feet) and using 15-16 pounds of a 20lb bag to get the 3-inch depth you mention.

Hope all this helps. And good luck
