Ok! Live planted- Excel is a carbon supplement for plants. I accidently killed 2 mystery snails i had just purchased by adding them to a tank with Excel- i didnt know it could kill them. Now i know!

Snails are very sensitive to copper. It's used in snail killing formulations. Kordon Rid Metals and some tap water conditioners are supposed to neutralise a range of heavy metals, including copper. However, they do not actually remove copper. Only partial water changes will gradually remove it.

This probably wont put your mind at much ease but my one local store gets shipments of mystery snails every week- they all die by the end of the week, every week. They told me to only purchase snails on weds's when the shipement first arrives if i hope to keep any alive. Needless to say, i dont purchase snails (or <email> ) from this particular store.

Salt, Lack of food, Did you use one of those vacation feeder blocks?

What were the conditions surrounding the death besides the vacation, did you add anything unusual to your tank, did you do a water change before you left, did you change filter cartridges before you left?

The more information you give us the easier it will be to help track down the problem. However, there may be no explainable cause without someone that knows snails really well.

well everything was normal and no I did not do a water change before I left(I had some pregnant fish that gave birth and there were fry that I was looking for that were in that tank that I was moving so I did not want to suck the fry up). but the snail died right next to the heater in the corner. When I got back I was guessing he was dead his shell was really pale looking and so yesterday since he had not moved for like three days that I saw I picked him up and his trap door fell out and his insides were already out so all I was holding was a shell . and I had just changed the cartridge about a(a little over a week) week before I left.

You changed the filter cartridge? You probably put your tank back into a cycle by doing this & this may be the culprit in your snails death. Throwing away the filter cartridge throws away most of your good bacteria- you want to keep them until they fall apart. Just swish them once a week in some used tank water to remove debris. When they start to fall apart, place a new one in with the old one to seed it. Or switch to filter foam inserts (sponges) which dont fall apart.

well my filter says change it once a month and he has gone threw it before and he was fine. And by the time I left on my vacation it was dirty again. and my gravil was dirty soso anyway and the snail in a different tank died even though he had algae and the water was fine and the filter was the same.

All filters say 'change once a month'....it keeps the people that make them in business. Its not necessary. The filters are supposed to look dirty- that indicates they are full of good bacteria. Just swish it in some used tank water when you do water changes- thats all you really need to do.

Please keep in mind that mystery snails are large snails with large appetites. They can starve to death if all they get is algae off the glass and crumbs from the fish. Give them a treat of fresh veggies once or twice a week to keep them healthy. You can feed them pieces of cucumber, zucchini, bell pepper, green bean, romaine lettuce, or spinach. You can soften up the harder veggies by covering them with water and microwaving for a minute or two before feeding.

no, but the lettuce will float so you may need to put it on a clip so the snails can get to it. If they have a hard time eating the romaine you can lightly cook it by putting it in the microwave like FryDaddy suggested or you can put it in a dish or colander and pour some boiling water over it to soften.

THIS IS DIRECTED TO JOHN ARTHUR,

three of my mystery snails died last night. THe only thing i can think of is that i added two new plant species, I dipped them in 1 part bleach to 17parts water so that any snail eggs would die....but it seems to have killed off my adult mystery snails, there are 5 baby snails about 4 months old in my tank too but they seem completely fine and unaffected? what in the hell is going on!??!

Your snails probably died from poor filteration. What type of snails did you have?

Please do not reply to older threads as it knocks down the newer ones. Next time please look at the top right corner to see the date, if its longer than 1 week don't bother replying.

Dear guests. You need to go back to the very first post to see how old it is before replying. The original poster is probably not around. Even when you see the last posts are 4 months old, those posters are probably gone too.

So it's best to answer the newest posts as they need the help now.

Thanks
